INDIEConfab goes to Puerto Rico!
Our Confab series explores different cities and their unique hospitality scenes and communities. Through immersion, participation, and conversations, you’ll see how hospitality thrives in our host city. This time: San Juan!
If you’re looking for a destination where record-breaking travel and flourishing independent hospitality intersect, all signs point to Puerto Rico – San Juan, in particular. The island is being reshaped by tourism, outpacing the U.S. coastal markets in lodging growth and visitor numbers. That’s what drew us to Puerto Rico as the next destination for one of our events, because they are at a transformation point. Where does the island go from here? How will adaptive reuse, sustainability, and the rise of independent hospitality in Puerto Rico influence the broader global market? We want to be in the room where conversations happen – the future of an island rewriting the rules of tourism and economic growth.

We are so excited to host with Hotel El Convento!
Historic Landmark Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico
The island offers beachfront luxury hotels and next-wave hotels in areas like Condado and Miramar, but we were especially drawn to the story of El Convento in Old San Juan. A 365-year-old convent turned boutique hotel that proves a spirit of renewal is possible in more ways than one. El Convento is more than a venue; it’s a living example of honoring the past while exploring Puerto Rico’s next chapter: independent vs. branded identity, sustainability as resilience, and an island-wide shift towards experiences that give back as much as they take.
